Katina “Andie” Mitchell, LSCSW, RPT earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and later a Master of Social Work with a specialization in the military community. Her most recent clinical focus has been mental health with children, families, and young parents though she has experience working in multiple military settings, clinically and volunteer based. She also specializes in helping other therapists learn and understand self employment in growing their own practices.

This offering allows participants to understand the legal and ethical aspects of standard of care, therapeutic duty, scope of practice and competence, confidentiality, and unprofessional conduct for mental health professionals. In addition to exploring issues related to confidentiality, privacy, privilege, and confidentiality, as well as mandated and permitted breaches of confidentiality.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify ethical aspects of the therapeutic relationship.
  2. Identify ethical standard of care for mental health professionals.
  3. Identify ethical concepts and parameters, including scope of practice, scope of competence, therapeutic duty, and unprofessional conduct.
  4. Learn the difference between confidentiality and privilege, mandated and permitted breaches, releases of information, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  5. Identify ethical standards for avoiding conflicts of interest, including dual relationships and sexual relationships with clients.
